Cryptozoology (from the Greek: κρυπτός, kryptos, "hidden" + zoology; literally, "study of hidden animals") is the search for creatures that have eluded scientific study and classification, in particular living specimens of creatures thought extinct or legendary. Owing to the nature of the study, much of the evidence supporting the existence of cryptids is anecdotal, and a lack of physical evidence to support claims is a hindrance that often results in the entire field being judged to be pseudo-science.

The field is a counter-part to cryptobotany (plants) and cryptomycology (fungus).
