Bod, Bhö, བོད་, known in English as Tibet (as in the Tibet Autonomous Region), Thibet, variously traced to the Turkic Töbäd ("the Heights"), and in Chinese as Xizang, Zàngqū, 藏区 ("Zang District"), including territories held and divided by the Tibetan Empire of Gampo, the Mongol Yuan, Phagmodrupa, Rinpungpa, Tsangpa, Ganden Phodrang, Qing, and the modern Chinese government. It is presently known as the Xizang Autonomous Region and is governed as part of the People's Republic of China.
