Colombia, as in República de, so-named for Cristoforo Colombo (or, as the English call him, Christopher Columbus). In particular, we refer to particular territories of the former Virreinato de Nueva Granada, which became Gran Colombia, which had a province of Cundinamarca, which became Nueva Granada, and then Confederación Granadina, before becoming Estados Unidos de Colombia, and finally República de Colombia. It is presently divided into thirty-two departments — Amazonas, Antioquia, Arauca, Atlántico, Bolívar, Boyacá, Caldas, Caquetá, Casanare, Cauca, Cesar, Chocó, Córdoba, Cundinamarca, Guainía, Guaviare, Huila, La Guajira, Magdalena, Meta, Nariño, Norte de Santander, Putumayo, Quindío, Risaralda, San Andrés y Providencia, Santander, Sucre, Tolima, Valle del Cauca, Vaupés, and Vichada — and the Capital District of Bogotá.
