Brazil, or Brasil in the Portuguese (as in República Federativa do ), so-called for the pau-brasil, brazilwood, variously existing, since the conquest of large territorial claims on eastern South America by the Portuguese Empire, as a Captaincy, Governorate General, State, Kingdom, Empire, and Republic. It is presently divided into twenty-six states — Acre, Alagoas, Amapa, Amazonas, Bahia, Ceara, Distrito Federal, Espirito Santo, Goias, Maranhao, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Para, Paraiba, Paraná, Pernambuco, Piaui, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Norte, Rio Grande do Sul, Rondonia, Roraima, Santa Catarina, Sao Paulo, Sergipe, and Tocantins — and a Federal District.
