(Redirected from Baptist)
A Protestant tendency, originating as part of the seventeenth-century English Dissenters who broke from the Church of England, that places special emphasis on believer's baptism (a.k.a. adult baptism) by complete immersion. Just as Calvinism's core tenets are given summary as the acrostic acronym TULIP, one may use the word BAPTIST similarly to find a general concept of Baptist belief: Biblical authority (i.e. Sola scriptura) - Autonomy of the local church (i.e. Congregrationalist polity) - Priesthood of all believers - Two ordinances, the Believer's Baptism and the Lord's Supper - Individual soul liberty (i.e. freedom of religious choice) - Saved and baptized church membership - Two offices of the church, elder and deacon.
