The Established Church, or State Church, of England, and the central authority of the Anglican Communion abroad, claiming a lineage dating to the Roman occupation of Britain, and to Augustine of Canterbury and his much later Gregorian mission to Kent. The Anglican schism from the Roman Church and renouncement of papal authority occurred in 1534 during the reign of Henry VIII, with the independent English Church only gradually moving toward Protestant forms over the decades that followed.
