The Royal Arcanum is an American fraternal insurance society, initially founded by a group of United Workmen, Masons, and Odd Fellows (including Darius Wilson and John A. Cummings) at Boston, Massachusetts in 1877, primarily to offer "'protection' at less cost than old line insurance companies."[1] Unlike many similar societies of the late 19th and early 20th century, the Royal Arcanum continues to operate up to the present day, insuring some twenty-thousand members in the United States and Canada.
