Emanuel Swedenborg (January 29, 1688 - March 29, 1772) was a Swedish philosopher, scientist, and Christian esotericist, author of the eight-volume Arcana Cœlestia ("Heavenly Mysteries", 1749-1756), and De Caelo et Eius Mirabilibus et de Inferno, ex Auditis et Visis ("Heaven and its Wonders and Hell From Things Heard and Seen", 1758), his account of the afterlife, which form the basis for a reform movement within Protestant Christianity called Swedenborgianism.
