Québec, from the Algonquin Kébec or the Mi'kmaq K'webeq ("where the waters narrow"), in reference to the narrowing of the Saint Lawrence River at the site of what became Ville de Québec during the period of French settlement in North America, and which presently also refers to the province entire, encompassing former territory of what was Nouvelle-France as well as the later jurisdictional claims made by the Canadiens and their latter-day Québecois inheritors.
