Newfoundland and Labrador (as of 2001), formerly Newfoundland (as by Henry VII), also known, in Inuktitut, as ᐃᒃᑲᕈᒥᒃᓗᐊᒃ (Ikkarumikluak, "place of many shoals") and ᓄᓇᑦᓱᐊᒃ (Nunatsuak, "the big land"): a former British colony; later a self-governing Dominion within the British Empire; returned to direct British rule via the Commission of Government in 1933; and enjoined thereafter into the confederacy of the Dominion of Canada after two referenda and certain backroom dealings between the British and Canadians in 1949.
