From Kook Science
Named for the Columbia River, itself named for Captain Robert Gray's ship, Columbia Rediviva. The river Columbia, in turn, inspired the naming of the North West Company's Columbia District, which became the Hudson's Bay Company's Columbia Department, before ultimately being absorbed into the Colony of British Columbia during the reign of Queen Victoria, and after which it eventually became a province in Canadian Confederation. Large territorial space, including a good chunk of the Rocky Mountains.
