Named for Princess Louise Caroline Alberta (1848-1939), Duchess of Argyll, the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, the Prince Consort, and the wife of John Campbell, 9th Duke of Argyll, who was the Governor General of Canada from 1878 to 1883, during which time, in 1882, the Alberta Provisional District was founded as part of a re-organisation of the North-West Territories. Twenty-three years later, with the passage of the Alberta Act in 1905, the District was brought into the Canadian Confederation as the Province of Alberta.
