Charles Proteus Steinmetz (April 9, 1865 - October 26, 1923), born Carl August Rudolph Steinmetz, was a German-born American mathematician and electrical engineer, famed in his day as the Wizard of Schenectady among other press appellations. His important contributions to the sciences include the law of hysteresis, his symbolic method of calculating alternating current, and his theory of electrical transients.
