Việt Nam, 越南, known in English as Vietnam (as in the Socialist Republic of), supposed generally to originate from Nanyue, the Southern Yu, one-time vassal of the Chinese Han dynasty, spanning territories of South-East Asia on the Indochinese Peninsula held and divided between various dynastic states from prehistory into modernity.
