A Calvinist Protestant tendency, originating in the Church of Scotland generally. They are so-named for their ecclesiastical governing structure (polity), whereby the Presbytery, or elders, and synods are the governors of the church entire, as contrasted with Episcopal polity (governance by bishops) or Congregational polity (sovereign congregations as autonomous and independent churches).
