Psychonautics (from Greek: ψυχή, psychē ["mind, spirit, soul, life"] + ναύτης, naútēs ["sailor, seaman, navigator"; hence, "sailor of the mind [soul]") is a broad methodology for the production and study of novel modes of consciousness, including holotropic states, frequently associated with psychopharmaceutical and psychotropic drug use, though also inclusive of meditation, prayer ritual, sensory deprivation, biofeedback, and other means.
