Summary

Photo of the Sonus Film-O-Sonic, from 1964 U.S. Government report on such devices, Health Frauds and Quackery.

"FILM-O-SONIC", Health Frauds and Quackery, Washington: U.S. Government Printing Office, 1964, p. 50, "This is actually an ordinary tape recorder with the speaker removed. A continuous tape of the song hit "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" is played silently on the machine. The quacks selling these machines claimed that they had diagnosed and cured cancer, cataracts, heart disease, ulcers, and other diseases. It was also claimed that the machine would kill germs. Various versions of this machine sold for $300 to $500. The three quacks selling the Film-O-Sonic were found guilty by a San Francisco court and were given sentences ranging from $250 fine to 6 months in jail."
