Summary

Description

The Pope as wild man. Engraving by Melchior Lorsch, with text from Martin Luther. (The Pope as a wild man with dog-ears and the triple crown on his head. Out of his mouth smoke emerges, toads, snakes, scorpions, and swarms of flies within the stream. In his right hand a leafless tree, and in his left a broken key. Face, hands, and knees are bare, the rest of him very hairy. The long tail runs through between the legs. Right against the bottom is a second winged Satan figure with lion's mane and claws, and a cardinal's hat around the neck of the head fantastically formed, from whose beak emerges a bishop. This monster is sitting on a table, onto which filth falls. Both figures hovering over the burning pit of hell, in which the damned are seen.)
